What parameters should be provided to the quay crane (STS crane) manufacturer when buy quay crane?

2026-01-14
Ship-to-Shore (STS) crane: commonly known as quay crane or container crane. This is a specialized piece of equipment at the forefront of container terminals. Purchasing quay cranes (STS crane) is a significant investment, requiring detailed technical specifications and commercial requirements to ensure the equipment fully meets the terminal's actual operational needs. Providing the following parameters to the quay crane manufacturer will enable you to obtain more accurate quay crane quotes.

The following is a classification and list of key parameters required when purchasing quay cranes (STS crane):

1. Quay Crane (STS crane) Basics and Overall Parameters

Quantity to be Purchased:
The planned number of quay cranes to be purchased.
Purpose of Equipment: Pure container handling, or also handling some heavy-lift operations (multi-purpose)?
Design Life: Typically required to be no less than 25 years.
Working Class / Working System: Defined according to FEM or ISO standards (e.g., A8), indicating the workload and load spectrum of the quay crane equipment.
Environmental Conditions:
Meteorology: Maximum wind speed (working wind, non-working wind, survival wind), rainfall, thunderstorms, ambient temperature range, humidity, salt spray level, etc.
Earthquake: Seismic fortification intensity.
Geology and Hydrology: Wharf load-bearing capacity, track parameters (gauge, track type), tidal or water level change data.

2. Performance and Dimensional Parameters (Core)

Quay Crane (STS crane) Lifting Capacity:

Quay Crane (STS crane) Rated Lifting Capacity: The maximum lifting capacity under the spreader (e.g., 65 long tons, 70 long tons). The spreader's own weight must be considered (typically 16-18 tons).
Quay crane double container spreader capacity: If supported, the combined lifting weight of two 40-foot or two 20-foot containers must be specified.
Additional load: If there is a need for auxiliary equipment such as lifting pushers, it must be specified separately.

Span and Dimensions:

Gap: The distance between the center lines of the sea-side and land-side trolley tracks (e.g., 35 meters).
Base distance: The distance between the center lines of the two trolley outriggers on the same track.
Outreach: The maximum horizontal distance the spreader can reach from the center of the sea-side track towards the sea (e.g., 70 meters, sufficient to cover a 26-row wide ultra-large ship). This is one of the most critical parameters.
Rear reach: The maximum horizontal distance the spreader can reach from the center of the land-side track towards the land (e.g., 25 meters, necessary to accommodate container truck operations on the dock surface).

Lifting Height:

Above Rail Height: The maximum height the quay crane's spreader can lift above the rail surface (e.g., 55 meters, to accommodate ships with deck stacking heights exceeding 10 layers).
Below Rail Height: The maximum depth the quay crane's spreader can lower below the rail surface (e.g., 20 meters, to handle deep-draft ships or bilge operations).

Working Speed:

Quay Crane (STS crane) Lifting Speed: Full-load and no-load speeds (e.g., 90/180 m/min).
Trolley Lateral Movement Speed: The speed at which the loaded trolley travels along the main beam (e.g., 240 m/min).
Main Trolley Travel Speed: The speed at which the entire crane moves along the rails (e.g., 45 m/min).
Front Beam Pitch Time: Typically required to be ≤5 minutes for rapid berthing and unberthing of ships.

3. Mechanical and Structural Parameters

Structural Design Standards: Which international standards are followed (e.g., FEM, ISO, DIN, AISC).
Drive Type: Full AC variable frequency drive is the mainstream.
Wire Rope: Type, winding method, safety factor.
Lifting Gear:
Type: Single-box, double-box (fixed or telescopic)?
Spinning Function: Must it have ±5° anti-sway or fine-adjustment rotation capability?
Telescopic Range: e.g., 20 feet to 45 feet.
Guide Plate Device: Is it equipped with a top or video guide plate to assist in automatic box alignment?
Buffering and Windproof Devices: Thrust end buffer, rail clamp, top rail device, windproof mooring device, etc.

4. Electrical and Control Parameters

Power Supply: Sliding contact line power supply (mainstream) or cable reel power supply. Voltage and frequency (e.g., 10KV, 50Hz or 6.6KV, 60Hz).
Control System:
Core Architecture: PLC control system brand and model (e.g., Siemens, Mitsubishi).
Drive System Brand: e.g., Siemens, ABB, Yaskawa.
Intelligent Functions: Must be clearly listed.
Automatic/Semi-automatic Functions: Automatic course correction, anti-roll system, intelligent deceleration, automatic positioning, ship type scanning system.
Container Identification System: Optional optical character recognition system.
Remote Control Support: Whether an interface is reserved or directly configured for future automation upgrades.
Monitoring and Diagnostics: CMS status monitoring system, fault diagnosis system, black box data logging.

5. Safety and Environmental Requirements

Safety Devices: Limit switches for each mechanism, overload limiters, collision avoidance system (with adjacent quay cranes or vessels), emergency stop, anemometer, aviation obstruction lights, lightning protection system.
Environmental Requirements: Noise restrictions (bridge, engine room, exterior), LED lighting system, oil spill collection device, green painting scheme.

6. Quay Crane (STS crane) Delivery, Installation, and Acceptance

Delivery Method: Whole machine transport or shipment of parts, on-site assembly.
Installation and Commissioning: Scope and timeframe of responsibility of the manufacturer.
Trial operation and acceptance standards: No-load, static load, and dynamic load test standards; performance testing (such as cycle time determination); final acceptance procedures and standards (such as 240 hours of continuous trouble-free operation).

7. After-sales service and training

Warranty period: Typically 12 months after delivery.
Quay crane (STS crane) spare parts supply: Initial spare parts list, long-term supply commitment.
